Wager Swayne letter, 1872 Apr. 19.

Letter from Wager Swayne to the president of the United States, evidently Rutherford B. Hayes. In the letter Swayne recommends T.W. Conway, an army chaplain who was involved in the education of African Americans in Reconstruction-era Louisiana, for a diplomatic post as consul to Ireland. Swayne explains that Conway was recently forced to leave Louisiana due to growing local hostility to his educational work in the state. The letter includes two much briefer notes of recommendation by J.R. Osborn and by Alex Reed, who describes Conway's energetic service in support of the Republican cause in Ohio.
